In January 2022, Tabitha Droy approached me with concerns about The Piano Technology School's existing website, hosted on Wix. The primary challenges were poor search engine performance, confusing site structure, and a design that did not reflect the high-quality services offered by the school. This case study outlines my approach to addressing these challenges and delivering a website that not only aligns with the school's prestige but also excels in user experience and search engine optimisation (SEO).

The Piano Technology School, founded by Steve Droy, and based in Rugby, Warwickshire, is a premier institution offering intensive courses in piano tuning and repair. As a leading training provider in the UK, the school attracts students globally. However, their online presence, particularly the website, was not effectively conveying their expertise and was underperforming in search engines.

My approach to web design for The Piano Technology School was meticulously planned and executed, with a focus on clarity, coherence, and professionalism. Recognising the school's prestigious position in the industry, my aim was to create a digital platform that mirrors its quality and expertise. Here's how I achieved this:

The initial step was a thorough analysis and restructuring of the website's architecture. This was critical for several reasons; The revamped structure was designed to be intuitive, allowing visitors to easily find information, whether they were interested in piano tuning training or local tuning services. By organising content logically, I made sure that users could navigate through the site with minimal clicks, thus enhancing the overall user experience. Key information was made readily accessible, reducing the cognitive load on users and ensuring that they could quickly grasp the essence of what the school offers.

Establishing Consistent Branding

Consistency in branding was a primary focus to align the website's aesthetic with the prestige of The Piano Technology School. I ensured that fonts, colours, and other design elements were consistent across all pages, reinforcing the school's brand identity. The design elements chosen reflect the professionalism and expertise of the school, giving the website a sophisticated and welcoming appearance. The use of imagery, including photos of classes, piano tuning sessions, and Steve Droy himself, was strategically planned to convey the school's story and ethos visually.

Crafting a Fully Responsive Design

Moving away from the limitations of Wix, I focused on creating a website that excels in responsiveness. The site was designed to be fully responsive, ensuring an optimal viewing experience on desktops, tablets, and smartphones. I implemented fluid grid layouts that adapt to the screen size, maintaining usability and aesthetics across different devices. Given the increasing use of mobile devices for web browsing, special attention was given to the mobile user experience, ensuring fast load times and easy navigation on smaller screens.

Following the successful launch of the redesigned website, The Piano Technology School requested the initiation of a Google Ads Pay-Per-Click (PPC) campaign, specifically focusing on the piano tuning aspect of their business.

The comprehensive keyword research conducted for the SEO component of the website was instrumental in setting up the Google Ads campaign. By leveraging this data, I was able to target the most relevant and high-performing keywords, ensuring that the ads reached the right audience.

The campaign was meticulously crafted to target the appropriate geographical area. This precise targeting was vital to attract potential clients within Rugby and its surrounding regions, aligning with the school's desire to enhance its local business presence.

To effectively track the performance of the campaign, I installed Google Tag Manager on the site. This allowed for the seamless monitoring of conversions and user interactions. Additionally, by linking these metrics with Google Analytics, we gained a comprehensive view of the campaign's impact and user behaviour.

The integration of Google Tag Manager with Google Analytics enabled us to track conversions effectively. This meant we could see not just the number of clicks but also how those clicks translated into tangible business enquiries.

The campaign, despite operating on a modest daily budget, proved highly effective in generating high-quality local leads. These leads were not just in quantity but also in relevance and potential for conversion into actual business for the school.

The Google Ads are continuously monitored and optimised. Based on real-time data, adjustments are made to ensure the most effective use of the budget and to maintain the high quality of leads generated.
