In the not-so-distant past we had to trudge down to a library and sift through a bunch of dusty books to find an answer to a burning question. Today, however, Google, our trusted ally, has made information a mere click away. Yet, the horizon is hinting at another change. In the playground of technology, a new player is making its mark - Artificial Intelligence.

A Self-Destroying Prophecy?

There's a new habit forming in the online world - asking ChatGPT for the best pancake recipes or stock market predictions. This shift is more than a passing fancy. It's a seismic change, fundamentally altering how we seek and consume information. But as we're giddily chatting away with these sophisticated AI models, we may be setting in motion consequences that could profoundly impact traditional web-based content and the search engines we've grown to rely on.

Imagine a scenario where our conversations with AI assistants become so seamless, so efficient, that we prefer them over the laborious process of typing out queries on Google or Bing. This path could inadvertently eclipse the need for traditional web-based content. The diligent content creators, bloggers, and journalists, who have honed their craft over the years and produced a vast reservoir of information, might find their relevance waning.

Consider this: a passionate travel blogger pours her heart into crafting a comprehensive review of the best rooftop bars in New York City, only to find her audience diminishing. The culprit? A concise list generated by an AI model, offering the same information, sans the personal anecdotes and the atmospheric descriptions.

While the AI's efficiency is commendable, it risks eroding the rich tapestry of human experience that traditional content often brings. And not only that, but today's AI models owe their knowledge and abilities to the existing wealth of traditional web-based content. They've learned from the billions of lines of text out there, from academic papers to user reviews. If traditional content generation slows down or comes to a halt, what would serve as the training ground for these AI models?

Trust No One

The realm of AI brings with it a Pandora's box of implications, but perhaps the one that looms largest is the issue of trust. When we traditionally seek out information via a search engine, we're not just passive consumers. We're detectives, piecing together clues to ascertain the trustworthiness of our sources. We assess the credibility of a website by its design, we verify the writer's qualifications, we compare information across multiple sites, and sometimes we even dig into the comments section to see what other users are saying.

For instance, consider a university student researching climate change's impact on polar bears for her environmental science degree. A conventional search engine serves as a gateway to a diverse range of resources. She can access various studies, scrutinise statistical data, and sift through differing scientific opinions. She can balance articles from 'Nature' with reports from the 'World Wildlife Fund' and blog posts by Arctic researchers, gaining a holistic, nuanced understanding of her subject.

Enter AI, and this dynamic changes dramatically. AI, in its present form, tends to serve as a singular authority, delivering an answer without context or alternatives, and without disclosing its sources. It's akin to the student being handed a solitary book on climate change and being informed, "This is it. This is all you need." The absence of transparency can be disconcerting. Are we to accept these AI-served answers without question, without knowing their origin?

Another wrinkle in this narrative is the spectre of fake news and misinformation. It's no secret that our digital era has been stained by instances of false information spreading like wildfire, manipulating public opinion, and causing real-world harm. Now, as AI inches towards becoming a primary information source, the handling of misinformation is a pressing concern.

Imagine this scenario: an anxious parent, influenced by a local Facebook Group, asks an AI assistant, "Do vaccines cause autism?" The AI, due to some flawed input data, echoes a discredited study linking vaccines to autism. The result? A scared parent, a child potentially deprived of life-saving vaccines, and a community put at risk. This hypothetical scenario underscores the monumental responsibility that AI developers and regulators carry.

Addressing these challenges will require the integration of robust fact-checking mechanisms and constant algorithmic updates to ensure AI sources are accurate and trustworthy. In an era where information is power, the accuracy and transparency of AI responses could have significant implications, from shaping public opinion to driving policy changes.

Is Google on the Back Foot?

In the midst of this technological whirlwind, I can't help but spare a thought for Google. Like the startled hare in Aesop's fable, the tech giant, long used to leading the race in the search engine domain, seems to have been caught napping. After years of unchallenged dominance, Google finds itself in an unfamiliar landscape, grappling with the dual challenge of monetising AI-based searches and crafting an AI that matches the expectations of its users.

Are Larry and Sergey out of a job!?

Think about it: Google's bread and butter has been serving up search results peppered with relevant ads, generating billions in revenue. But how do you introduce ads in an AI-led interaction without compromising the user experience? Should Google's AI assistant subtly recommend products during conversations? Would a casual mention of, say, the latest iPhone model, while discussing smartphone technology, sit well with users? Or would it feel like a crass sales pitch?

On the flip side, Google might consider a premium model, charging users for a high-quality, ad-free AI search service. Imagine, in exchange for a monthly fee, users could enjoy an unhindered conversation with Google's AI, devoid of promotional interruptions. But would users agree to pay for something they've been getting for free all these years?

Google must balance monetisation with user experience, commercial interests with technology ethics. All the while, the world watches, holding its collective breath, waiting to see if Google can continue its balancing act.

Nobody Knows!

In the somewhat tumultuous world of tech, the seemingly untouchable Google might have a challenger – the flashy new AI on the block. Many are falling over themselves to have a chat with these quick-witted bots, potentially putting traditional web-based content in jeopardy. In a plot twist worthy of a daytime soap, these bots are at risk of biting the hand that feeds them, as they owe their existence to the very content they might render redundant.

And let's not forget the question of trust. It's like going from a smorgasbord of information sources, where we get to play detective, to being handed a solitary book and told, "This is all you need." Throw in the potential for spreading misinformation faster than a sneeze in an elevator, and you've got yourself quite the thriller.
